Ugh... ok, so I am an RN and work full time and on a day/night schedule... I just got off a stretch of 7 nights in a row, had the weekend off and have had a hard time readjusting to the day schedule, which I start today and work for 3.. I then get 1 off and come back for another 7 nights in a row...
Anyhow, last nite, I was unable to sleep. I got in about 2 hours tops! This is a never ending cycle.. once I get used to the other schedule, then its time to flip me around again! I live my life tired all the time and I have talked to the people in the staffing office and they say there is not much they can do for me..... sigh..... Man, that sounds hard! When I was in college (undergrad) I worked some overnights at a group home for disabled kids. I was ALWAYS tired. I remember after I was in grad school a couple of years one day I suddenly realized, I hadn't fallen asleep in class or on the couch watching tv in a really long time- it was because I wasn't working overnights any more! I hope you can get some decent rest here, SOON!

My daddy works in a papermill, and he is 48. He has been working there since he was 21, I believe. He has worked shift work that whole time. His schedule flips around too. I worry about him and his health. He doesn't sleep consistantly, and he doesn't eat consistantly. He is so run-down. I hope this isn't a permanent thing for you!! I know Daddy is always grouchy when his schedule changes. Just hold on and go day by day!

my dh is a paramedic so I can understand your pain. He works on 24/48 with the occasional over time shift which means he can be working for 36 straight hrs. He stays so tired and has a hard time keeping his days and nights straight sometimes.
Hopefully you'll get a better schedule one day.

Fluctuating schedules can be an adjustment! My job in the Corps was a 24 hr shift, 07:30 until we got relieved the next morning at 07:30 by the oncoming section. We also either had to PT before duty- which meant getting up at 04:30, or trying to have a productive pt session after our shift. Then, depending on what week we were on, we had one day off, then back to work again. If you lived in the barracks, sometimes sleeping afterwards was a no go. The Marine who lived across the hall from me, would start blaring some George Strait at 08:30 in the morning without fail.
During holidays- Christmas and New Years, we go on "running guard" which means 24 on, 24 off for about three weeks.

Hi Jamie,
I am so sorry you are still so tired! I have a friend who had a contract with a hospital for a year and had a terrible schedule, she couldn't wait until the contract ended. Anyway, she took a couple of months off and went to Alaska with her family, then took a position in a group home working with disabled kids. She is much happier, even though she does have to put in some weekends. Doesn't work nights though. Hope your situation gets better soon!
Sandy
